Alexis Tsipras was elected on Sunday President of a unified SYRIZA, winning 74.08% of the votes of the more than 3,000 delegates who took part in the founding conference of the main left wing opposition party in Greece.
The election result for the 200 strong central committee of the party is yet to be announced.
The charter of the new party was voted in on Saturday. It is worth noting that delegates voted to allow more time for SYRIZA’s factions to decide whether or not they would be dissolved.
The majority of delegates also dismissed a proposal from Aristeri Platforma (Left Platform) for the party to leave open the option of Greece returning to the drachma.
