Pan-Macedonian Associations around the world asked for a referendum before any agreement is signed between Greece and its northern neighbouring country FYROM on the name issue.
In the Resolution of the 11th Pan-Macedonian Associations World Conference, held in Florina from 13 to 14 July, Macedonians around the world expressed their disagreement with a compromise that might include a composite name for FYROM, stating that the Greek people, not the government, should have the last word on the name of the neighbouring country.
In the resolution, they also stated they will never accept “any name that includes the term Macedonia and its derivatives” for Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia.
As stated in the adopted resolution, “the name Macedonia is undoubtedly the historical and cultural heritage of Greece”.
Pan-Macedonian Associations around the world, who took part in the 11th International Conference, also request in their resolution to establish 29 September as a national day of remembrance for the victims of the Bulgarian occupation of eastern Macedonia from 1916 to 1918.
The conference was attended by representatives from Australia, USA, Canada, Europe and Africa.
