The office of Daniel Andrews has revealed the extent of his injuries after a nasty fall at home on Tuesday.

While the fall was ‘concerning’, the Victorian leader was found not to be suffering from any head injuries following x-rays taken for precautionary reasons. Mr Andrews fell while preparing himself to return to work after several days of leave.

In his statement, Mr Andrews said:

“Early this morning, I was admitted to hospital after slipping and falling on wet and slippery stairs.

“A CT scan has revealed several broken ribs and vertebrae damage, and subsequent medical advice has recommended I remain in intensive care for the next few days.”

Acting Premier James Merlino said Mr Andrews would soon be ‘back on his feet’ after replacing him for a press conference in Healesville, north-east of Melbourne.

Premier Andrews had been scheduled to announce an inquiry into Indigenous disadvantage on Tuesday. Mr Merlino said Premier Andrews had been “passionate” about the announcement.

“It would have only been a trip to the hospital that would have kept him away,” Mr Merlino said.

Victoria’s main opposition Liberal Leader Michael O’Brien was among the first to wish the premier a speedy recovery.

‘Hope it’s not serious. Wishing Daniel a speedy recovery,’ he wrote on social media.
