A group in Santorini is attempting to break the Guinness World Record for flying the largest ever Greek flag.

One of the project organisers, Theodoros Kaloudis told GR Times the project started off as a thought by local children who brought the idea to their parents.

“The project started as an idea from our children and the original plan was to lay it in the sea. However, things quickly changed. We decided to make it much bigger, to post it online and turn it into a charitable moment,” he said.

The group funded the 7,000 euro, 1500 square metre flag through sponsorships and donations, but will be giving remaining funds raised to families in need.

To commemorate 200 years of Greek Independence on 25 March , the flag will fly at a height of 50 metres with the help of a large crane, whilst French Rafale fighters will fly over the island.

The icing on the cake however will be getting the flag crowned as the largest Greek flag in the world.

“The relevant application has already been made and in three months a representative from the international organisation will come to Santorini for the assessment,” Mr Kaloudis said.

Organisers will be launching a Facebook page to share the news and live stream the event.
