A number of local celebrations were held by councils in Australia, especially traditional Greek strongholds.
Darebin Councillor Emily Dimitriadou said she initiated the idea of celebrating the 200th anniversary of Greece’s Independence as an opportunity for the community to come together as one and “acknowledge what the Greek community has brought to Darebin”.
Her suggestion met with unanimous agreement, because “we’re really focusing on multiculturalism this year”.
Darebin Mayor Lina Messina of Sicilian background, said she feels a camaraderie with Greeks, and even tried speaking the language when addressing the event.

“I think it is important to recognise their contribution to the Darebin landscape. We have a beautiful Greek school and a wonderful community and recognise their contribution.” she said, adding that a multicultural festival to celebrate all cultures, including the large Greek population of Darebin is in the works.
Kat Theophanous MP, member for Northcote, spoke of the importance of the day to “those of us of Greek heritage and also to our vibrant community”.
“It is also an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on the importance of democracy itself and to always remember its fragility and the social responsibility we have to one another to protect it,” she said.
At Moonee Valley Council, Deputy Mayor Cr Katrina Hodgson and other councillors were present for the celebration of Greece’s Independence.
