South Australia’s richest man Con Makris is behind a bid to launch a daily Kangaroo Island ferry service between the island and Glenelg.

The high-speed ferry will take off from the revamped Holdfast Shores Marina and transport 400 people to Kingscote, on Kangaroo Island.

The Makris Group is working in conjunction with Caj Amadio to lobby the state government to endorse the pedestrian ferry, which will make the journey in just under two hours.

In 2006, Mr Makris partnered with SeaLink to establish a short-lived catamaran service from Glenelg.

A spokesman for Transport Minister Tom Koutsantonis confirmed discussions were underway with department officials and the plan’s benefits were “being considered”.

“Any proposal would have to meet the regulatory and development obligations of any project in this state,” the spokesman told Adelaide Now.
