A gathering that the ultra-right Golden Dawn party had planned to take place in the main square of the western port of Patra was banned at the last minute by local police due to fears of clashes between ultra-rightists and members of leftist and anti-establishment groups.

As the city’s central Ethniki Antistasi Square is often used for protests by leftists and self-styled anarchists, the police reportedly believed that the planned demonstration would escalate into violence.

Golden Dawn decried the ban as a joint initiative by “anarchists and the state against nationalists” and said it would hold its “political gathering” at 8.30 p.m. Tuesday at Olga Square, a less central Patra landmark.
