One of the most prominent contemporary Greek shipowners, John Angelicoussis, died on Saturday morning, while in hospital in Athens, where he was being treated since 20 March following a heart attack.

Mr Angelicoussis was born in 1948 and hailed from the island of Kardamyla in Chios.

He took over the Angelicoussis Shipping Group in 1989 after his father passed.

The company grew to become one of the world’s largest shipping organisations. International activities encompassed Australia, where vessels of the Angelicoussis fleet have been involved in transporting mineral ores to China and other countries.

Most recently in 2018, reports had emerged on the shipping magnate’s negotiations with AGL Energy for the establishment of a Floating Storage Regasification Unit (FSRU) [a special ship used to transfer Liquefied Natural Gas through oceanic channels] in Melbourne.

Greece’s Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis paid tribute to the legacy of Mr Angelicoussis in a tweet praising his contributions to the national marine industry and tradition.

Mr Mitsotakis also made publicly known that the shipowner had made donations towards the country’s public health response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Angelicoussis’s daughter, Maria, who has been acting CEO for the past three weeks during his hospitalisation, will now take the reins at the company.
