This Thursday two teams of politicians will gather in Adelaide to establish whether Greeks truly ‘do it better’, though defining what exactly ‘it’ is may well be central to the discussion.
Combining the South Australian launch of Justice Emilios Kyrou’s new book Call Me Emilios with an evening of entertaining oratory – the relative advantages and shortcomings of Hellenic heritage will be presented by Independent Senator Nick Xenophon, Victorian Federal MP Maria Vamvakinou, SA State Minister Tom Koutsantonis, garderning guru Costas Georgadis and former Federal Liberal Minister Amanda Vanstone.
Comedian George Kapiniaris will also be on hand to ensure no one takes it all too seriously. The Great Debate will be moderated by leading Adelaide barrister Michael Abbott AO QC and is organised by South Australia’s Foundation for Hellenic Studies.
Adelaide lawyer Harry Patsouris – a member of the Foundation’s board – told Neos Kosmos that the debate was an example of the Foundation’s commitment to promote Hellenism “in as many and diverse ways as we possibly can. Being Greek is more than souvlaki and sirtaki … not that there is much wrong with that … the debate concept was seen as a novel way to promote Hellenism whilst raising money for a decent cause.”
Established in 2006 initially to lobby for government funding to support the teaching of Modern Greek at Flinders University, the Foundation has evolved in recent years to become a dynamic promoter of all things Greek.
The Great Debate – ‘Greeks do it better’ takes place on Thursday 7th November from 6.00 pm – replete with taverna-style food and drinks at Pavilion on the Park, South Terrace, Adelaide.
