New online information aimed at improving bone health within the Greek community was released by Osteoporosis Australia.
Education fact sheets on four main topics for bone health – Calcium, Vitamin D, Exercise and Medicines – are now available online in Greek, in order to increase accessibility for all Australians to information about bone health and to raise community awareness.
Over 1 million Australians have osteoporosis and over 6 million have low bone density.
“With 1.2 million Australians suffering from osteoporosis and a further 6.3 million Australians with low bone density (osteopenia), accessible community information about prevention and management of osteoporosis is essential. Nearly half of all adults do not get their recommended intake of calcium and nearly 30 per cent of adults have low vitamin D levels,” said Gail Morgan, CEO of Osteoporosis Australia.
“The new fact sheets have been translated into the Greek language to help improve awareness about bone health and reducing the risk of osteoporosis throughout life. We need everyone to be thinking – calcium, sunshine and exercise.”
The new translated information also explains the common types of medicine available for osteoporosis patients to reduce their risk of fracture.
Dr Theo Penklis, who works closely with the Greek community, supports the release of this new information.
“It is now easy for people in our local community to access quality information about bone health in Greek with the click of a button,” said Dr Penklis.
“I encourage people to visit the website www.osteoporosis.org.au and share the information with family and friends. Bone health is important and there are easy steps everyone can take to improve it,” said Dr Penklis.
