Melbourne topped the charts as the world’s most liveable cities from 2011 through to 2017, came second in 2018 and 2019 and tumbled to eighth in 2021 after the pandemic brought harsh lockdowns.

It has now unexpectedly topped the charts again, coming first in Nestpick’s Work-From-Anywhere Index.

Sydney came third, behind Dubai, in the study by the Dutch company which assessed 75 cities on costs, infrastructures, legislation, freedoms as well as liveability.

Melbourne topped Sydney as far as affordability in terms of renting a home office space and also scored better as far as cost of living and ‘culture and leisure’ were concerned.

The study is believed to be the first comparison of the world’s best cities to work from home.

The score was based on lifestyle, clubs, pubs and restaurants as well as TimeOut and Mastercard users. The cities were assessed for remote working infrastructure, weather, LGBT and gender equality.

Both Melbourne and Sydney did not score well for remote working infrastructure.
