AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou has been named the most powerful sports figure and the third most culturally powerful man in Australia, according to the Financial Review Magazine.
Demetriou landed the honours for his notable role in ferrying the ASADA drugs scandal that rocked the AFL to a logical conclusion. The Financial Review Magazine felt “that the AFL was able to engineer a virtual end to the saga with record sanctions against the Bombers before the September finals highlights the power of its boss”.
In the culturally powerful category, Demetriou was promoted up to third from sixth thanks to his work at “tidying up the behaviour of AFL footballers” and for “his response to ASADA in setting the pace for others to follow”.
