Victoria recorded no new local cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday for the first day since the Delta outbreak in mid-July.
No new exposure sites have been added since Saturday as 3,000 people of more than 20,000 primary close contacts from the outbreak remain in isolation.
Active infections fell from 124 cases to 99.
There were 30,000 tests administered in Victoria on Tuesday, while 17,612 vaccine doses were given.
Lord Mayor Sally Capp said it was still too early to say if the New Year’s Eve festival would take place this year after the $3.4-million celebration was ditched in 2020.
“We’re in active discussions with the Victorian government about what may be possible to safely deliver,” she said, adding that the city would be guided by health advice.
“We hope we will be able to deliver a bigger celebration, because more people in the city means keeping people in jobs and our restaurants, bars and cafes full.”
In Queensland there were 16 new locally acquired cases and confirmation of a postiive case in Cairns.
Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young said the reef pilot from Cairns was fully vaccinated with two doses of Pfizer in March.
There are 63 active cases, and a record 51,479 tests conducted in the past 24 hours.
The Queensland Government postponed the EKKA public holiday for next week due to the outbreak. The annual show will be rescheduled when Parliament resits at the end of August.
