There might be more medals on the horizon for team Greece at the Tokyo Olympics as the men’s water polo team blitzed their way through to the semi finals.

On Wednesday Greece went up against Montenegro in the quarterfinals, crushing them with a final score of 10-4.

Both teams played defensively in the first quarter, with the only goal scored by Greece’s Constantinos Genidounias.

The following three quarters came through with more excitement on the goal scoring front as Greece powered through scoring nine goals, whilst Montenegro only managed a total of four.

This is the first time Greece’s water polo team has qualified for the semi’s since the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

Team Greece will be going head to head with Hungary on Friday at 4:30pm.

Unfortunately in another pool, team Greece won’t be making an appearance as five members of the artistic swimming team tested positive for COVID-19, Tokyo organisers announced. The other seven members of the team were deemed to be close contacts.

Greece’s artistic swimming team has been moved out of the Olympic village and are currently in quarantine.

“We judged the monitoring had to be strengthened, and it was decided to do it outside the village,” Tokyo 2020 spokesman Takaya Masa said Wednesday.

“They had made a huge effort and actually came to Japan under difficult circumstances. I imagine the expectations from the Greek people for these athletes were quite high so it’s painful to think of them.”
