Tim Cahill has equalled the record for most goals in the national team, and hopes to eventually beat Damian Mori’s goals record. His game winning goal in the Costa Rica match last week took his tally up to 29, making the internationally capped player quite patriotic.

“I’m very proud. To get the record with Damian Mori is a special time,” Cahill said.

“So now there’s something there to be broken for the next few games or maybe the next World Cup.

“But I’m definitely very proud because it’s a big honour to play for your country and get records like that.”

Cahill has been impressive with the New York Red Bulls, scoring 13 goals in 43 appearances since joining the side from Everton in July last year.

Last month he netted the fastest goal in Major League Soccer history with his seventh-second strike against Houston Dynamo.

He feels his form is as good as ever. “I’ve always felt great because I’ve played just under 50 games domestically this year,” he said.

“My job is to make the manager’s job hard by playing as many games as possible and being in the best form.

“I’ve got to make sure I’m still knocking at the door and keeping the youngsters on their toes.”
