Several locations covering vast areas of the Greek mainland and islands had been listed under a Very High Fire Danger alert for Sunday 15 August by the General Secretariat of Civil Protection.
The orange colour-coding applied for parts of Evia, Attica, Viotia, the Peloponnese, Crete and some Aegean islands where the weather was expected warm and windy.

Firefighters supported by ground forces and fire trucks from at least four EU countries have been on alert during the weekend putting out and preventing the rekindling of widfires in Gortynia in Arcadia, at Ancient Olympia, Ilia, and eastern Mani.
A fire that broke out on Friday in Laconia had been brought under partial control as of lately with the help of two helicopters deployed alongside firefighters on the ground, but blazes were still being fought at Southern Evia, following an evacuation of residents from Mesohoria village on Saturday afternoon.
Ancient Olympia is among areas of concern for rekindled wildfires along with Gortynia and neighbouring Ilia.

Greek firefighters have received additional international support at those locations.
Forces deployed via the European Civil Protection RescEU include 35 firefighters and 14 fire engines from the Czech Republic, 240 firefighters and 60 fire engines from France, 244 firefighters and 56 fire engines from Germany and 40 firefighters and 13 fire engines from Austria.
Meanwhile in Australia, one of the latest messages of solidarity to Greece has been issued by South Australian politicians, Labor leader Peter Malinauskas,
Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Zoe Bettison and Assistant Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Joe Szakacs.
“We are saddened to learn the news of the continuous wildfires during the hottest summer in Greece since 1987 […]The people of Greece are resilient and will get through this devastation. We offer our thoughts to those in Greece and their families and friends here in South Australia,” an excerpt of the message reads.
