Thousands of Greeks are making their way back home these days from the islands, as their August holidays come to an end, and authorities are keen for them to get tested for coronavirus.

As an extra incentive, the Health Ministry announced on Friday that returning holiday-goers who have not been vaccinated will be given two free self-tests.

The free self-tests will be available in pharmacies from 30 August until 6 September and can be claimed by unvaccinated adults but also children aged between five and 17 years old (collected by their parent or guardian).

The latest measure comes as Greece confirmed another 3,064 new coronavirus infections in the 24 hours to Saturday, taking the infections’ total since the pandemic began to 579,734.

There were also 35 deaths from Covid-19 recorded.

Currently, the median age of COVID-19 patients in Greece is 39 years of age while the median age of the deceased is 78.

Of the 13,599 pandemic deaths so far, 95.3 % had an underlying condition and/or were aged 70 or over.
