Alphington Grammar School maintained its high rating on the recently released listings for the top secondary schools in Victoria by Better Education, an independent online school directory and information platform that incorporates the whole of Australia.

The Better Education Top Secondary Schools in Victoria listings gave Alphington a score of 94 points out of 100 for the quality of education it provides to its 535 students. This placed the school at number 89 out of the 150 top Victorian schools on the listing

The principal of the school which was established by the Greek Orthodox Community in 1989, Dr Vivianne Nikou, told Neos Kosmos that the listing reflected the steady growth that the school had experienced over the past decade.

“At Alphington Grammar School we have seen consistent improvements over the last 10 years. In 2019 we were featured in the media for our outstanding NAPLAN scores,” Dr Nikou said.

“In 2020 we won ‘The Age’ newspaper’s award for most improved VCE results in 10 years for the northern school district and this year we are amongst very worthy and prestigious institutions in the top 100 Schools in Victoria.

“Most recently our NAPLAN results indicated that we had achieved well above the State average in every category at every year level. This is a remarkable achievement for a truly open-entry, non-selective school.”

She said the COVID induced lockdowns had represented a major challenge that the school had overcome.

“Schools are such centres of socialisation and collaborative learning. Remote Learning has challenged students, staff and parents in ways we have not experienced before. It has required an even more responsive, explicit and flexible lesson structure to be designed to ensure that our students’ learning isn’t compromised.

“During Remote Learning we have created multiple Contact Point Lessons to ensure the fine balance between learning success and looking after our students wellbeing. Everyone is focused on supporting the students through the hurdles and things that impact their level of engagement and success,” Dr Nikou said.
