Prime Minister Scott Morrison has promoted Immigration Minister Alex Hawke, who joins Cabinet, with Christian Porter’s old roles divided between Angus Taylor and Melissa Price.
Mr Porter, the industry, science and technology minister, quit two weeks ago after refusing to name people who had contributed to a blind trust to pay for part of his legal bills.
Mr Morrison announced the reshuffle as he confirmed that the international border would reopen next month for states that have reached 80 per cent vaccination rates, starting with NSW.
Mr Hawke, a close ally of Mr Morrison, will retain all of his existing responsibility but join cabinet to fill the vacancy.
The Prime Minister commended Mr Hawke on his “absolutely extraordinary job most recently in the evacuation from Kabul”.
“That was an incredibly complex exercise, and it wsa done with an enormous amount f effort and great skill and professionalism and I’m very pleased to be welcoming Mr Hawke to the Cabinet,” he said.
