“A House On An Island In The Aegean” will premier at the historic theatre ‘La Mama’ in Carlton, on 16 November.
It is Luke Icarus Simon’s fifth play, in which he explores domestic and family violence, the most urgent social issues in Australia today.
It is a shocking story of forbidden love that is expected to “divide” the audience. The play is set in 2009, when Greece became a global experiment of harsh economic policies. During this time Apollo meets married man Achilles. They fall in love and start a passionate love affair. But is love ever enough? Is Apollo strong enough to stop a lifetime of abuse? Can Achilles stop living a lie?
The witty dialogue, with references to Greek philosophy and language is bound to entertain the audience, accompanied by the evocative Greek soundtrack that will take you to the Aegean.
Apollo teaches Achilles about his cultural heritage, about the influence of Greek philosophy and language on Western civilization. He takes him on a tour to Greece, a journey of a lifetime. All his efforts are part of his greater goal to better understand his identity, to find pride in his heritage, but also to heal, and discover inner peace.

Celebrating 41 years since his stage debut, this play is Luke Icarus Simon’s ode of love to his Greek and Cypriot cultural heritage, his homeland, a project that took him 20 years to complete.
As in all his works, Simon deliberately creates characters of a particular ethnicity, in an attempt to influence the major players in the entertainment industry to involve performers of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, not only in supporting roles but also in the lead on the Australian stage.
“A House On An Island In The Aegean” is a modern Greek-Australian Tragedy. It is a compelling work of passion, exploring the universal theme of abuse within relationships, based on the assumption that sometimes dreams do come true, but there is always a price to pay.
The members of the crew and cast are all of either Greek or Cypriot descent
The play was written, directed and produced by Luke Icarus Simon and stars Luke Icarus Simon and Kostas Moutsoulas. Lighting design is by Efterpi Soropos and stage manager is Millie Levakis-Lucas.
