The A-League set records last week, seeing its one millionth fan of the 2013/14 season walk through the gates of AAMI Park.

It marks the shortest amount of time taken to get 1,000,000 fans through the turnstiles.

Football Federation Australia CEO, David Gallop, said the record shows just how popular soccer is becoming in Australia.

“To reach the 1,000,000th fan for the 2013/14 season in round 15 is another indication of the strength of the Hyundai A-League,” Gallop said.

“The mainstream Australian public continues to embrace the competition all around Australia and New Zealand, with increases in attendance and membership
in all of the five key states; NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia, as well as Wellington in New Zealand.”

Most impressively, fan participation has increased, with a 35 per cent increase in club memberships. The average TV audience has increased by 31 per cent, showing the introduction of a free to air licence for SBS has increased viewership.

Average attendance at games is up by 8 per cent, a small amount but showing solid growth.

Increased interest is expected this year, with the Socceroos fighting to stay alive in the FIFA World Cup in June. The league has also been getting interest overseas, with high profile marquees calling Australia home, including Italian star Alessandro Del Piero and French international William Gallas joining the ranks.
