Convicted terrorist Dimitris Koufodinas will be able to request conditional parole in September 2027, a misdemeanors judges council in the city of Lamia announced on Friday.
Koufodinas, a member of the former 17 November terrorist group, petitioned for parole on the grounds of having been incarcerated for 19 years in a regular jail and 8 years at agricultural ones (legally considered “beneficial penal servitude”).
His petition was based on an earlier law, replaced in July 2019, under which all lifers used to have a right to parole after serving 16-19 years in jail.
The judges ruled on the basis that the old law referred to people with a single life sentence, not multiple ones like Koufodinas. The new criminal code of 2019 allows all lifers conditional parole after serving 25 years at a regular jail.
