Two senior constables in Sydney have been suspended and charged in relation to the consensual encounter with a Sydney schoolgirl last March.
Angelo Dellosa, 31, said he was “very remorseful” whereas James Delinicolis, 30, said, “I am disgusted with myself”.
Mr Delinicolis fronted the NSW District Court. He revealed that the three weeks he was held in custody were “very traumatic”. During this time he received death threats from other inmates as they knew he was a police officer.
His wife also filed for divorce, a position he understood.
“I am disgusted with myself,” he said.
“It’s brought great embarrassment to the NSW Police Force,” he said.
“It’s a very bad image for a police officer to do such a thing and engage in extracurricular activities.”
Mr Delinicolis had handed the schoolgirl a post-it note with a fake name and phone number, a pile of which he kept in his notebook in case he met an attractive woman, according to a statement of agreed facts. The two constables and the girl later met at a hotel.
According to a statement of agreed facts, Delinicolis kept a pile of post-it notes with a fake name and phone number on them in his notebook, one of which was handed to the schoolgirl at a train station before the trio later met in the hotel.
Acting Judge Peter Berman asked him about the post-it notes: “How many would you hand out a day?” the judge asked.
“It would depend, probably a couple a week,” Mr Delinicolis said.
“Depends who I was working with, depends where I was tasked.”
Mr Delinicolis said that he accepts full responsiblity for his actions, agreeing that he “should be more respectful, especially to women”.
Mr Dellosa sobbed in court as he recalled a stabbing he experienced as a teenager in the Philippines before coming to Australia and said this had been the reason he had wanted to join the police force.
“I’ve hurt so many people,” he said, adidng that his wife was a “wonderful woman” for forgiving him.
“I’ve done everything I can in my power to fix what I’ve done.”
He said he was “remorseful” and “disgusted” and had also been threatened while in custody.
