Popular Greek presenter/journalist George Trangas passed away on Tuesday morning following a battle with COVID-19.
Mr Trangas, who was unvaccinated when he was diagnosed with coronavirus, was rushed to Sotiria hospital on Tuesday and put on dialysis due to problems with his kidney function. He suffered from further heart complications which lead to intubation causing pulmonary edema and had a stent placed.
A veteran journalist, Mr Trangas used his radio platform on Crash to invite Greeks to join the Free People Movement, a new political party, at the start of the year.
Mr Trangas started writing from a young age for Eleni Vlahou’s magazine, Ikones. He later began to work with Mesimvrini newspaper covering the sports beat. Later, as a reporter for Vradyni newspaper, he covered crime stories before moving to political reportage. In 1988, while working as a correspondent for Eleftheros Typos at London’s Harefield hospital, he presented updates on the health of former prime minister Andreas Papandreou and also uncovered details about the socialist leader’s relationship with flight attendant Dimitra Liani.
As a publisher, he created Hora and Anexartisia newspapers and Crash magazine.
On television, he was the presenter of Horis Anaisthitiko and Viva and also presented the news for a number of television stations.
