Gold medalist Katerina Stefanidi commended on the announcement of twice MVP basketball player Giannis Antetokounmpo as the top Greek athlete for 2021.

The Greek Olympic pole vaulter expressed her opposition towards the PSAT award decision saying that the winner should be Greek track and field athlete Miltos Tentoglou.

According to Stefanidi’s perspective, the Greek Freak might won his first NBA championship playing for the legendary Milwaukee Bucks, however, basketball championships happen every year and are not as significant as the Olympic Games.

For Stefanidi, Miltos Tentoglou who competed in the length at the Tokyo Olympics deserved to be named athlete of the year.

“It’s Olympic years. The NBA happens every year,” she tweeted.

“The Olympians every 4 (5 in this case). Also, Giannis’s team won the NBA, not Giannis. Tentoglou and Duskos won the gold medals at the Olympics on their own. This is my opinion”.

Following that remark, the pole vaulter went on to question the female best athlete of the year award which went to Greek tennis player Maria Sakkari.

“For women there was no medal… so the rest of us were garbage. An Olympic athlete should have won the title for the women’s category, too,” said Stefanidi, who received a lot of backlash on social media.
