Greece’s tennis lead, Stefanos Tsitsipas and world number four, had to withdraw with an elbow problem ahead of his match with ninth-ranked Hubert Hurkacz in the singles. Tsitsipas was then replaced by Aristotelis Thanos.
Poland’s Hurkacz stayed ahead of Thanos who is ranked 1,076th, to give Poland a 2-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Kamil Majchrzak had already defeated Michail Pervolarakis 6-1, 6-4.
Following the singles, Tsitsipas joined by Pervolarakis in the doubles beat Szymon Walkow and Jan Zielinski 6-4, 5-7, 10-8.
Tsitsipas, who had an operation in late November, with a flare-up a concern ahead of this month’s Australian Open had previously said that he felt ready to compete and that his elbow was in great condition, however, he had to stay in the bench and ice his elbow for the rest of the singles game.
“We will see day-by-day, match-by-match,” Tsitsipas said.
