World No4 Stefanos Tsitsipas’ elbow gave up on him after a surgery in November costing Greece a good placement at the ATP Cup.
Tsitsipas fought hard against Argentina’s world No.13 Diego Schwartzman last night in Sydney but lost with an undefinable 2-0 after three hours.
Greece had already succumbed with a 2-1 to Poland on Saturday when Tsitsipas withdrew from the singles before contesting in the doubles.
Speaking to the press earlier he sounded uncertain about his future in the Cup following his loss and his injury.
“I don’t know what my future plans are for this tournament. I’m not really sure. I’d love to play, but I really don’t know how I’m going to feel tomorrow,” he said.
“That was one of the biggest concerns – if I’m going to play this match today – how is the recovery going to be tomorrow, which was the issue with the doubles. If I finished the doubles, next day I couldn’t serve. I was unable. I was in a lot of pain. So I’m really hoping to be able to walk on court tomorrow and practice some serves without pain. That’s my biggest goal right now, to have 100 per cent recovery on my elbow.”
Meanwhile, Schwartzman who experiences his 11th career victory over a top 10 player spoke to the press not believing his luck.
“I’m very happy, a set down against Stefanos is not easy,” he enthused.
“I have to be ready to run, it’s my game. Since I’ve been young I try to get the ball in and run. Three hours, you see, it’s normal for me.”
