The Victorian Minister of Multicultural Affairs Ros Spence has announced the launch of a photography competition open to Victorians of multicultural background.
The minister said the competition entitled Capturing Culture: A Focus on Multicultural Victoria, was the first of its kind and was open to anyone within the state of a multicultural background. Applications are open until Sunday 17 April.
“This is a great opportunity for Victorians from multicultural backgrounds to share their experiences from their own perspective. The exhibition gives us the chance to recognise the vital contribution Victoria’s multicultural communities have made to our State – and their incredible resilience through the pandemic,” Ms Spence said.
Prizes worth $9,000 would be offered and the entrants would “have the opportunity to contribute to the visual record of unique time in our history,” the minister said in statement.
On June 22, 24 artworks from shortlisted competition entries would feature in an exhibition where the winning entries will also be announced.
The works submitted for the competition would be scored by a panel of judges over six categories: people’s choice, days of significance and cultural celebrations, portraiture, daily life and family, community resilience and the Minister’s choice.
The chairperson of the Victorian Multicultural Commission Viv Nguyen AM said the competition was a chance to showcase the talents of multicultural art practitioners in the state.
“Photography is a powerful medium to capture those fleeting moments that unite communities – the fleeting glances between loved ones, the sadness, the humour, the joy,” said Ms Nguyen.
