Today hundreds of young Greek Australian footballers will be hitting the pitch for the 2014 Hellenic Cup.
This year’s host, Yarraville Glory will start proceedings with the first match, taking on Oakleigh Cannons.
Eight Greek clubs are taking part, including South Melbourne, Manningham, Northcote City, Oakleigh Cannons, Caulfield Cobras, Brunswick City, Western
Suburbs, Yarraville Glory, Mill Park and many teams will be fielding multiple junior teams.
Today, multiple age groups from under 8s to under 18s will get game time, with the first match beginning at 10am.
Matches will continue tomorrow where three grounds at McIvor Reserve will be used to meet demand.
The tournament has links back to 1962, when the teams Athena Brunswick, Megas Alexandros, Princes Park Iraklis (today’s Northcote City Hercules),
Olympiakos Dandenong and Doxa Richmond competed for the cup. As the number of Greek teams began to build, the Cup became more mature and eventually formed a committee in 1983 to make the Cup a yearly fixture.
