A banner by Greek-Australians has been raised outside the MCG, near Shane Warne’s statue paying tribute to the great Aussie cricketer, one of the best players the country, and the world, has seen.
‘King Warnie’ was different to other players; aside from his sportsmanship he was loved and admired for his showmanship, his big personality that made him relatable not only to Australians but everyone that came across his path. The Greek community was no exception.
The banner, that features both the Greek and the Australian flags writes: “R.I.P. King Warnie” signed “Greeks of Melbourne”.
Famous comedian Nick Giannopoulos who took a photo of the banner and later shared it on social media said: “Been thinking why this makes sense. At the Ancient Olympics the winners of the events were admired and immortalised in poems and statues. This banner stands next to Shane’s statue at the MCG. Greeks have always understood the importance of sport in helping bring the world together in peace & the people who played it were treated as heroes. RIP to the greatest spin bowler to ever play the game.”
Dozens more Greeks bid the cricket legend farewell in the comments, expressing their admiration and condolences.
