A new Greek radio program, Geia Sou Ellada, has hit the airwaves above the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula, on the frequency of the Peninsula’s popular radio station, RPP FM.
With its new Greek presenter, Maria Vaitsis, the program is broadcast every Thursday evening, from 6.00 pm to 7.30 pm, and provides entertainment, as well as interviews with Greek personalities, community announcements, and worldwide news with an emphasis on Australia, Greece, and Cyprus.
RPP FM has had a Greek program for over 25 years. To strengthen its Greek connection, it’s worth mentioning that one of the foundation members of RPP was a Greek Australian, Con Demopoulos.
Maria Vaitsis is the first female presenter of the program on RPP.
The RPP FM audience includes a number of Greek speakers who call the Peninsula and south-eastern Melbourne home. Around 2,500 Greeks live on the Peninsula only. However, as presenter Maria Vaitsis tells Neos Kosmos, often Greek people from Melbourne who have holiday homes in the area tune in when enjoying the facilities the Peninsula has to offer.
Only two months since its launch, Geia Sou Ellada is attracting many Greek and Greek speaking people around Melbourne, and with RPP FM offering live streaming and iPhone and Android applications, the listening audience can be worldwide.
“Many of the listeners on the Peninsula and also in the wider city of Melbourne have given positive feedback. A large number of the older Greeks listen to the program as it reminds them of home and, because of the sports and music content, younger Greeks Australians are tuning in as well,” says presenter Maria Vaitsis.
Apart from interviews with Greek Australian personalities, interviews are also conducted with personalities of interest from Greece. For 20 March, 6.00 pm to 7.30 pm, an exclusive interview with Greek actor Yiorgos Vasileiou has been confirmed. Vasileiou is known to Greek audience from the TV show Kalimera Zoi, in the role of unforgettable policeman Stathis Teoharis.
To listen to the Greek program with Maria Vaitsis every Thursday at 6.00 pm on RPP FM, stay tuned to 98.7FM and 98.3FM Frankston. To listen from Greece, every Thursday, 9.00 am to 10.30 am Greece time, visit www.rppfm.com.au
