Geordan Papacostas, is one Queensland’s highest achieving Year 12 students, who was presented with an award by State Education Minister, Grace Grace, in a ceremony last Friday.
The student of St Joseph’s College student, received a top ATAR score of 99.95 in his final exams in 2021, and is among 47 outstanding students in the state who have been recognised for their incredible efforts by the Queensland Ministry of Education.
“A large part of my academic drive comes from my family’s humble beginnings in Australia. Having lived alongside my Greek migrant grandparents for the duration of my life, I have learnt the importance of hard work, commitment and providing for one’s family,” Geordan Papacostas told The Courier Mail.

With the best of prospects, Geordan began a Bachelor of Medical Science at Griffith University with a direct entry into postgraduate medicine, as he dreams of becoming a specialist doctor.
The same passion drives Geordan to excel in basketball, in the Brisbane Capitals, where his Greek grandfather, Paul, is famous with Geordan’s teammates as a great supporter.
His advice to students preparing for their final exams is to “have grit and be ruthlessly accountable to yourself”.
