Making my way to the Gasworks Arts Park, a feeling of excitement rushed through me. I couldn’t wait. We were creating Icarus’s wing out of chains and toothbrushes. Everyone’s pieces were amazing and unique.
The next day I had high hopes, reflecting on the day before. We first listened to the stories of how the Iris, Sunflower and Poppy evolved to become a flower. We then painted them without using brushes. Instead, we used toilet rolls for the sunflower, strings for the Irises and balloons for the Poppies. The final outcome was amazing!!!
I couldn’t wait for the final day. As I walked in the room, I saw easels and paint waiting for us. We first read a book about a young girl refugee and the struggles she endured. A very unique presentation using the letters of the alphabet and how these were relating to been homeless. We based our paintings on the loss of homeland, war and the Asia Minor catastrophe.

The final art works were all unique and everyone was very proud of what they did. The different interpretations of our work may be selected to be part of the art exhibition which is to be held later in the year at Steps Gallery under the theme Lost Homelands.
All the “budding” artists felt very happy in taking part in the three days’ creativity as well as extending their knowledge of Greek myths and legends. We all look forward to attending future extension classes, full of novelty, inspiration and education. – Zoe Hatzis (11 years old)
