Greeks are reducing their power consumption in the face of rising energy prices with power-grid operator, ADMIE, reporting a 27.5 percent a dip in medium- and low-voltage use by households and businesses when compared to the same month a year ago.
The power operator also reported that there was a 27.542 percent drop in consumption by high-voltage businesses over the same period that came after increased use of 8.9 percent in June and 13.5percent in May. Kathimerini newspaper reported that this was attributed by industry spokespersons to a 50 percent drop in usage in July by the Larco mining company and did not reflect a general fall by domestic high energy users in industry.
Experts predict that the weather will play an important part in the level of demand for gas and electricity, with many hoping for a mild winter to help reduce dependence on heating.
Domestic natural gas consumption has fallen since April when refineries opted to use naptha instead of natural gas to reduce their operating costs.
Data for July from the Hellenic Gas Transmission System Operator (DEFSA) has shown a 12.8percent fall in consumption compared to July 2021.
