New measures introduced by the AFL will create more of a level playing field and give struggling clubs a helping hand.

Six key changes that will come into effect next season will include upping player allowance, soft-capping club department spending and compensating smaller clubs for structural inequities.

“We’re trying to find ways to compensate smaller clubs for structural challenges they face, whether they be fixture challenges, whether they be stadium disadvantage,” AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said.

McLachlan said that the growing financial gap between big and small clubs was making it difficult for many clubs to invest in their football departments.

About 10 more financially secure clubs will be negatively affected by the changes.

AFL Commission chairman Mike Fitzpatrick says the changes are about making clubs more competitive and the game more interesting for fans.

“At the heart of these measures is the fan experience, the determination to ensure each club has the on-field capacity to compete each week and potentially to win each work,” Fitzpatrick said.
