Honouring the 200th Anniversary of Greek Independence, the Rallis School of Greek Dance (RSGDSYD) will present a show that brings the essence of the Greek heroes of 1821 to life, paired with music which depicts the battle, the struggle, laughter and freedom through storytelling and dance.

Dressed in authentic Greek and Ottoman costumes, the dancers will transform the stage into a theatrical experience depicting one of the most important events in Greek history.

In addition to traditional Greek dances, the audience will be entertained to the beat of tambourines and unique harem-style performances in a re-enactment of the festivities for the ruler, Ali Pasha during the time of the Ottoman Empire.

The older male students will perform strong and powerful numbers such as Τσάμικο (tsamiko) and Kλέφτικα (kleftika).

A choreography has also been created to include “The Dance of Zalongo”, a performance depicting the mass suicide of the women of Souli in addition to a highly energetic sword fight between Greek and Ottoman soldiers.

The production includes songs by Natalia Papadakis and Joanna Panagiotidis as well as hymns the likes of Ἁγνὴ Παρθένε (agni parthene), Τη Υπερμάχω (Ti Ipermaho)and traditional songs such as Έχε γεια καημένε κόσμε (Ehe geia kaimene kosme), Ένα παλικάρι 20 χρονών (Ena palikari 20 xronon). Joanna representing “Ἐλευθερία” (Freedom) will perform a solo dance and take centre stage in an anticipated finale celebrating the ultimate victory, freedom and liberty of Greece.

Two history enthusiasts and storytellers, Stavros and Vicky Kritikos will provide insight of the production as they narrate throughout the show and share valuable knowledge, critical events, details and information with the audience.

This special event has been endorsed by the Auspices of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia His Eminence Makarios who will also be in attendance on the night.
