Greek Super League team Olympiacos celebrated a milestone yesterday as they became the first Hellenic football club to reach 1,000,000 followers on Facebook.

Fans from across the world took to social media to voice their support, demonstrating that the most successful club in Greek Football’s history isn’t limited by national borders.

Last Thursday Brazilian left-back Marcelo Viera caused somewhat of a spectacle, re-enacting Cristiano Ronaldo’s trademark ‘Sui’ goal celebration when he scored in the Greek Cup clash against Atromitos.

He delivered his side’s second goal in what became a 2-2 tie with Atromitos putting the ‘red and white’ a point in front as he sped off to the sidelines to perform his world-renowned former teammate’s showboat.

The score seemed locked at 1-1 in the second leg of Olympiacos’ round of 16 matchup until Marcelo intercepted a cross at the back post to secure the lead; his fellow players encircling him in celebration as he did it.

While the match ended in a draw, it delivered the 28-time Greek Cup winners through to the last eight as it brought their aggregate score up to 6-3.

Currently third on the Super League Greece ladder, Olympiacos now trail seven points behind the leading Panathinaikos.

The ‘red and white’ face off against Atromitos F.C. again on Monday 23 Jan at 5.30am AEST.
