The Greek Community of Melbourne is partnering with Channel 31 to bring the final matches of the inaugural Greek Community Cup; the Greek Shield and Greek Cup finals to viewers in Victoria.

The tournament which began on 15 January has reached its pinnacle; on Saturday 11 February Mill Park SC will battle it out with South Melbourne FC for the coveted inaugural Cup at 1pm.

And at the same time Mavern City FC will face off against the Doncaster Rovers for the runners-up Greek Community Shield.

Bill Papastergiadis, President of the GCM shared with excitement news of the successful partnership with the community TV channel.

“Our objective with the Greek Community Cup is to bring together teams of Greek heritage on the football pitch, to give them a chance to come together, compete and thrive.”

“This partnership with Channel 31 will give all the fans who can’t attend Mill Park to watch the games in person the opportunity to tune in from home,” he explained

“Through this collaboration we’re able to promote the high-quality soccer these Greek Teams play to a broader audience.”

“We’re very excited to be able to bring the community together, and we encourage all the fans, come down to Mill Park and support the boys!” he remarked.

Michael Zafiropoulos, Board Chair of Channel 31 noted that “sport plays an important role in maintaining cultural identity and engaging our youth in constructive activity.”

“For more than a century the GCM has shown leadership in a range of activities relating to our multicultural society.”

The Greek Community Cup being one such example, he says.

“Channel 31 is pleased to be strengthening our relationship with an ethnic group that has played such a significant role in developing Australia as a culturally diverse and socially cohesive society.”

Michael Karamitos, Vice-President of the GCM gleefully described the partnership.

“We’re very excited to join forces with Channel 31 and demonstrate to a broader audience how strong Hellenism in Victoria is through athleticism and fair play.”

“Our aim when we went about re-starting the Greek Community Cup was to create a tournament which would bring friends together to mingle and network,” he said.

“All the Greek soccer clubs have been putting in the hard years, and we’re so proud that all the soccer lovers have been able to enjoy some scintillating games.”

The Greek Community Cup’s much anticipated conclusion will play out at 1pm, Saturday 11 February at the home of Mill Park SC, Partridge Street Reserve, Lalor.
