South Australia’s Premier, Peter Malinauskas, made a speech at last month’s Semaphore Greek Festival in Adelaide, announcing his government would honour its pledge to provide $2 million in funding towards SA’s new Greek Cultural Centre.
Port Adelaide Greek Orthodox Community (PAGOC) plans for the new cultural centre to house its Greek language school as well as a dance academy and music school providing for facilities for performing arts and youth groups.
The proposed development will be built opposite PAGOC’s Nativity of Christ Church on Church Street, Port Adelaide; the centre will be open to all the state’s people, not just it’s Greek community.
“I’m very proud of the fact that my government is contributing $2 million to the Greek Language School here in Port Adelaide,” Mr Malinauskas said.
Adding that “language is fundamentally central to the Greek culture.”
PAGOC’s President John Douvartzidis said in his opening speech at the Semaphore festival that the community’s vision was becoming a reality, highlighting the support they’d received from the state government and community at large.
Plans for the new centre began about four years ago, but were delayed due to the COVID pandemic; Mr Douvartzidis says it’s hoped construction will begin by the end of the year, and reach completion around 2025.
