This weekend, there will be recognition at A-League matches of the earthquake tragedy that has occurred in Turkey and Syria resulting in the loss of at least 20,000 lives with many more injured.
The disaster has claimed thousands of lives and the numbers are increasing as rescuers search through metal and concrete rubble for survivors in a region already impacted by Syria’s 12-year brutal civil war.
“We recognise many Australians have links with the disaster affected communities and we also recognise the joint passion for football that Australia, New Zealand, Türkiye and Syria share. As part of the A-Leagues’ support for the disaster ravaged-populations of Türkiye and Syria, we are encouraging A-Leagues fans to donate to the UNICEF fund,” the A-League committee said in a statement.
UNICEF has been on the ground in Syria for more than 50 years and Turkey for more than 70 years. This longstanding presence meant UNICEF could respond immediately.
By making a donation, football fans can help UNICEF deliver life-saving supplies to children and their families impacted by the earthquake.
