The trial of former New South Wales minister Milton Orkopoulos continues as the District Court of New South Wales heard witness testimony on Monday.

The 65-year-old faces a total of 28 charges, accused of allegedly sexually assaulting four boys between the ages of 11 and 14 over a period from 1993 to 2003 in Lake Macquarie and the Mid-North Coast region.

Mr Orkopoulos has pleaded not guilty to the charges which include child sex abuse and drug supply offences.

According to the ABC, a friend of one of the four alleged victims told the court he and his friend would meet with the accused “two or three times a week to smoke pot.”

“We would be smoking pot in the back of the car with him, in the Swansea carpark at the back of his office and in the Swansea electorate office,” the witness said.

The same witness told the court that Mr Orkopoulos allegedly plied him and his friend with drugs and alcohol at an election party in 1999.

Orkopoulos was elected the state member for Swansea in that year, replacing predecessor Jill Hall for whom he served previously as electorate officer.

“It was an ALP party and [my friend] and I had a couple of drinks in the car and then we smoked a couple of joints,” the witness told the court.

The ABC reports that Cate Dodds, the Crown prosecutor asked the witness a series of questions regarding their testimony.

“Why was there a party,” she asked

“I think because Milton got a promotion for her [Jill’s] job and she got a higher job,” the witness said.

“Who supplied the alcohol and who supplied cannabis,” the prosecutor asked.

“Milton,” the witness replied.

Defence barrister Paul Johnson rejected the witness’ series of events.

“There was no pot smoking on the night he was elected to parliament, he did not smoke pot or provide you with alcohol that night, did he,” he asked the witness.

The witness replied that he had.

Pressed by the barrister for further details of the night, the witness was asked whether they recalled if any TV cameras were present during the election party.

The witness replied that they did not know.

Mr Orkopoulos’ trial continues.
