South Australian Premier, Peter Malinauskas, and Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Zoe Bettison have bid the Greek Community a “Καλό Πάσχα!” in an official letter marking the significance of Orthodox Easter and conveying good tidings to Hellenes.

“For many in our community, Easter is an opportune time to connect with friends and loved ones,” the letter reads.

A well-known Philhellene, Mr Malinauskas’ electoral district of Croydon has a sizeable Greek population.

His presence at this year’s Semaphore Greek Festival in Adelaide didn’t go unnoticed, given his announcement to that the SA Labor Government will contribute $2 million in funding towards the establishment of a new Greek Cultural Centre in the state.

In fact, the Premier’s even been mistaken for a Greek himself! Likely owing to the fact his last name Malinauskas, and for that matter many Lithuanian surnames bear a striking resemblance to their Greek counterparts.

“It is a significant celebration, marking the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ,” the letter continued.

“For Christians, Easter is a meaningful time of prayer, reflection and thanksgiving, as well as a celebration of the foundation of their faith.”

The SA premier went on to highlight his state’s commitment to ensuring “cultural, linguistic and religious diversity” which he says “makes our state such a great place to live.”

And ended the letter wishing the Greek community a “happy, safe and festive Easter celebration.”
