Last Sunday’s Woollahra Council and NSW Consulate General of Greece joint cultural day at the Redleaf and Blackburn Gardens at Double Bay, called the Greek Day Out, was met with success.

Thousands of people turned out to enjoy traditional Greek dances, theatrical excerpts from the tragedy Oedipus Rex, live music and songs by Greek bands, and a photographic exhibition highlighting the historical links between Greece and Australia, in light of the involvement of the ANZACs in the First and Second World Wars and their presence in Lemnos and the Battle of Crete.

Furthermore, festivalgoers had the opportunity to enjoy various educational and recreational activities for children, such as reading Greek tales in both Greek and English, an arts and crafts show, Greek shadow theatre Muppets and an exhibition with Greek coins and banknotes.

It is worth noting that the National Greek Tourism Organisation (EOT) distributed brochures and screened audio-visual material highlighting the beauty of Greece and its attributes as a tourist destination.

The five-hour-long festival, which was staged thanks to the efforts of at least 100 volunteers, was concluded with a speech by Emmanuel Alfieri from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, on the economic lessons that both Australia and Greece draw from each other.
