As Greece seeks to tackle the issue of brain drain and retain highly educated individuals who have graduated from Greek universities, initiatives like the ‘Ionian Hall of Science’ provide hope for reversing this trend.
The Ionian Hall of Science, in collaboration with students from the postgraduate program ‘New Media Communication and Digital Marketing’ at the Ionian University, is spearheading a research initiative to provide comprehensive study aimed at understanding and reversing the brain drain phenomenon in Greece.
The study focuses on Greek scientists residing both in Greece and abroad, extending beyond those originating from the Ionian Islands.
The researchers have invited scientists to share their experiences and propose solutions by participating in a questionnaire available at the following web address: forms.gle/nhyvuiekJiftxvgx6.
In a recent report sent to Neos Kosmos, the Ionian University outlined the research team’s efforts to document and connect scientific professionals of Ionian Island descent worldwide.
Underpinning the ‘Ionian Hall of Science’ is an advisory committee consisting of globally recognised scientists and a scientific council.
Among the members is George Paxinos, a professor of psychology and medical sciences at Neuroscience Research Australia, affiliated with the University of New South Wales.
Paxinos is also an Honorary Doctor of the Ionian University (science.ihellenism.org/hall-of-science-team).
The primary objective of the ‘Ionian Hall of Science’ is to expand its database with the profiles of scientists and engage them in matters concerning the scientific community, local societies, and Greek scientific advancement as a whole.
The application allows scientists to voluntarily register their information, and third parties can suggest scientists who are then invited to participate in the initiative.
To participate or learn more about the project, interested individuals can visit the website science.ihellenism.org.
The questionnaire developed in collaboration with postgraduate students serves as one of the first research initiatives of the program seeking to capture the opinions and perspectives of Greek scientists in Greece and abroad regarding the brain drain phenomenon.
The research findings, set to be announced in July 2023, will be made freely accessible to the public.
