Excitement filled the air as the Language and Culture Schools of the Greek Community in Melbourne (GCM) embarked on a remarkable excursion on Monday, June 19 to the Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre. Their visit was a pivotal part of their preparations for the oral examinations of the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).

Students were transported back in time to the 1950s-1970s era. They were greeted by officials who shared the history and living conditions faced by the migrants. With lectures and expert guidance, these young minds were provided with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the past.

The students discovered the on-site accommodations where hopeful individuals once sought the beginnings of a new life. Educational materials distributed enhanced their learning experience, ensuring a comprehensive grasp of the migrant experience. As they absorbed every detail, a sense of curiosity enveloped the group, igniting a desire to engage with the subject matter.

The Bonegilla Migrant Reception and Training Centre holds a remarkable place in history, symbolising the resilience and determination of those who sought new beginnings after the ravages of World War II. Formerly military facilities, this transformational center embraced migrants from 1947 to 1971, witnessing the passage of an astounding 300,000 individuals who left an indelible mark on its storied halls.

For these Greek students, the excursion to Bonegilla was not only an educational trip but a captivating journey through time.

Their visit not only enriched their knowledge but also fostered a deep appreciation for the sacrifices and triumphs of those who came before them. As they departed, their hearts filled with gratitude for the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of history, armed with newfound understanding and a profound connection to the migrant experience.

The Language and Culture Schools of the Greek Community in Melbourne (GCM) can proudly proclaim that their students have embraced the past, enlightened the present, and are ready to shape a future inspired by the spirit of those who forged a path before them.
