Nectarios Triantis has officially finalised a move to Sunderland AFC, signing a four-year deal with the Championship team following a breakthrough season with Central Coast Mariners.

The young Greek-Australian makes the jump to England off the back of a championship-winning campaign with the Mariners wherein he featured 26 times and was a key member in the heart of the team’s defence.

The six-time English champions reportedly paid a $500, 000 transfer fee for the talented 20-year-old who, in addition to his club career, has represented Australia at Under-20 and 23 level.

Triantis was ecstatic upon arriving on Wearside (the area of the club), deeply excited to contribute to future success for the Black Cats.

“I’m buzzing to be here – I just can’t wait to get started and play in front of the fans at this historic stadium. When a massive club like Sunderland comes in, you can never say no. It was a dream to have won the league with Central Coast Mariners, but now I hope to enjoy similar success with Sunderland,” Triantis said in the club’s announcement.

Sporting Director Kristjaan Speakman also expressed enthusiasm for the young centre back, believing his abilities will suit the team well.

“Nectar’s progressed rapidly over the last 12 months – at both club and international level – and we are delighted that he selected Sunderland as his next step. On the pitch, and in possession, we feel he’s well aligned to our playing identity, whilst also possessing the balance of being a robust defender, which is vital in our league,” Mr Speakman said.

“We’ll be patient as he adjusts to new surroundings and adapts to a new style of play in a higher league, but we are confident that he’s got the personality to progress and develop his game.”

Central Coast manager Nick Montgomery spoke fondly on Triantis as he takes a huge step forward in his career, joining a side that was in the mix for Premier League promotion in the season just past.

“Whilst we are obviously sad to be losing Nectar, we are so happy for him to be given this opportunity to join such a fantastic club like Sunderland. We would never hold him back from a move like this as he deserves it,” Mr Montgomery said in Central Coast’s announcement of the transfer.

“Their fans are amazing and it’s a massive club. I have no doubt with time he will become a fan favourite for them. He is a wonderful young man who has developed rapidly in 12 months and played a vital role in helping us win the championship this season.”

Montgomery has tremendous belief in Triantis’ future and quality, raising the idea of him breaking into the Australia Men’s set-up in the next few years.

“When we lost Kye Rowles last season we needed someone to fill big shoes and Nectar certainly did that. It’s now time for him to make us all proud and I have no doubt he can be representing the Socceroos at the next World Cup.”
