The close-knit community of the Panagia Gorgoepikoos Monastery in Geelong gathered on Saturday, 1 July at Ballarat Receptions to commemorate the long-awaited completion of their church.

The newly finished structure, designed in the likeness of an 11th-century church from Mt Athos, stands as a testament to the unwavering dedication and collaborative spirit of the faithful.

Supporters from various parts of the country, including Sydney and Adelaide, joined the celebratory event, which marked a significant milestone for the community.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that the entire endeavour was accomplished without any government funding, relying solely on the generosity and commitment of individual donations over a span of 23 years.

The arduous journey to the completion of the church began a decade ago when the steel frame was first erected.

“Since then, truckloads of essential materials such as tiles, plaster, and bricks have been meticulously delivered, gradually transforming the vision into a stunning reality,” Mary Lalios told Neos Kosmos.

At the heart of the monastery lies the Katholiko, the main church, which holds great significance for the community.

Gerontisssa Kallistheni, a prominent figure within the community, expressed her gratitude to everyone in attendance and extended warm wishes for an evening filled with jubilant dancing and celebration.

The event also saw the presence of esteemed clergymen, including Fr Antonios Cagnoni, Fr Dimitri Catrinei, and Fr Konstantinos Apostollelis, who graced the occasion with their spiritual guidance and blessings.

“The completion of the Panagia Gorgoepikoos Monastery Church stands not only as a physical testament to the dedication and perseverance of its members but also as a symbol of faith, community, and the power of collective efforts. It serves as a beacon of inspiration for future generations and a reminder of the incredible achievements that can be accomplished when a community comes together with a shared vision,” concluded Mrs Lalios.
