The second phase of the ongoing heatwave that began on Friday was gripping Greece tight on Saturday while temperatures were expected to rise even further on Sunday, according to the updated emergency weather report issued by the National Meteorological Service (EMY) on Saturday.
Temperatures were expected to climb to 43C in some parts of Greece on Saturday. On Sunday, regions in the eastern parts of the country were expected to touch a sizzling 45C.
After a brief reprieve on Monday, when temperatures are forecast to ease by 2-5C, a third surge of very high heat will hit the country from Tuesday, the National Meteorological Service said in its updated forecast for heatwave ‘Cleon’.
This new thermal surge is forecast to continue until Thursday, 27 July.
