On Saturday, July 22, the authorities in Rhodes, Greece, have summoned a man from the village of Apollo for questioning over suspicions of arson, potentially linked to the devastating fires ravaging the Aegean Island for the last five week.
According to local media, Rodiaki emergency volunteers reported the individual to the authorities and have provided statements to assist in the investigation.
The person of interest, whose identity has not been disclosed, has not been charged yet.
Fire Services, Police, and Coast Guard officers question the individual and conduct inquiries to ascertain any involvement in arson, and whether there are others linked.
Last week, the Greek government’s crisis management unit activated evacuation plans to safeguard tourists and foreign nationals working on Rhodes. Reports say that approximately 19,000 people, have been evacuated while 30,000 locals have been relocated to safety.
