On Friday 15 September, the Nikotsaras association in Melbourne held a meeting resulting in the immediate provision of assistance to flood-affected people in Greece.
The Clayton-based club of Greek Australians who hail from the town of Elassona, in the regional unit of Larissa, Thessaly, convened in the aftermath of the devastating floods affecting their homeland.
The central theme of the meeting hosted in their premises was the impact of Storm Daniel on their Greek compatriots, with attendees hearing a first-hand account from the Club’s President, Thanassis Sakelaris, who just came back from a visit to Greece and the region.
Nikotsaras’ Secretary Effie Belagia presented the following proposals which were approved unanimously during the meeting:
- Immediate provision of a $10,000 package to the Workers’ Centre of Larissa on behalf of ‘Nikotsaras’ towards the immediate relief of flood victims, with the purchase of essential supplies, including water and medicine.
- Call-out to Greek Australian clubs in Melbourne for a joint meeting aimed at organising a community fundraising on Saturday 23 September 2pm at the Nikotsaras’ headquarters, 382 Haughton Rd, Clayton.
“We invite all Greek community members to attend the 23 September meeting, so that all Melburnian Greeks can contribute to the fundraising and show their solidarity. We strongly believe that Greeks across the globe will follow suit,” the club states.
